Today, more than 82 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes. These families and children have left their homes, their livelihoods and even their loved ones to escape conflict. But very often their difficulties do not end once they cross the border.

“We didn’t want to leave, of course. We hoped that the victory would be fast.”  

Evhen*, 17, brought his mother, Alla, to Romania from Ukraine in hopes of finding a safe place for her to escape the conflict. Their home city of Dnipro saw a handful of bombings before the two fled.

As Ukraine's refugees make the difficult crossing to Romania, they are greeted by crisis response teams and bitterly cold winter weather. 

"It's really cold these days. Temperatures are below zero, windy and snowy, so we wanted to immediately be of help for these people,"

More than 4 million people have fled Ukraine, making this the fastest exodus in Europe since World War II. Desperate families are finding shelter in the countries surrounding Ukraine-Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary. Uprooted from their homes, cities, and communities, families are clinging to the little they have as they flee.

A photo of his father, and the hope of one day finishing his education, are two things *Oleksandr, 17, is holding on to as his family adjusts to life as refugees. His father stayed behind on the family farm in Odesa, while Oleksandr, his two younger brothers and their mother, made the difficult journey to Romania.

Once a child enrolled in World Vision’s child sponsorship programme in Romania, 21-year-old Andreea is now giving back as a volunteer for World Vision's Ukraine Crisis Response, where she is helping to support refugee children as they flee Ukraine
